🎓Applying for a Secondary School Place

Moving on to secondary school is an exciting step for your child and your family. All parents and carers must apply for a secondary school place

Applications are coordinated by Derbyshire County Council, who manage the process for all schools.

🤝 Getting ready to apply

We recommend starting the process early so that you can make an informed choice for your child.

1️⃣ Research schools and visit open evenings

During the autumn term of Year 6, most secondary schools hold open evenings and tours. These are a great opportunity to:

  • See the school environment
  • Meet staff and pupils
  • Ask questions about curriculum, pastoral care and transition

2️⃣ Apply through Derbyshire County Council

Applications are made online through Derbyshire County Council, even if you are applying to schools in a different area.

When completing your application:

  • You can list your preferred schools in order
  • It is strongly recommended that you include your local (catchment) school as one of your preferences
  • Listing more than one school does not reduce your chances of getting your first choice

3️⃣ Meet the deadline

Secondary school applications:

  • Usually open in September
  • Close at the end of October each year

Submitting your application on time is very important—late applications are considered after all on-time applications and may reduce your chances of securing your preferred school.

4️⃣ Receive your offer

You will normally be informed of your child’s school place on 1 March (or the next working day).
