Y1/2- Robins, Kingfishers and Little Owls

Welcome to our home learning page for Y1/2. This is where we will set activities for your child to complete at home if school has to close for adverse weather or any other emergency.
Year 1
For reading and phonics, you can access games on Phonics play for free, read books on the Big Cat Collins website or play spelling games on Spelling Shed. You could also have a go at the split diagraphs activity below. Also, reading your child's school reading book or any book is also great!
For writing, have a go at writing some sentences to describe the troll in 'The Three Billy Goats Gruff'.
For Maths, practice your Number bonds to 20 and watch the videos! These are in the 'Addition and subtraction to 20 section'.
Year 2
Reading:
We have attached a non fiction reading comprehension activity for the children to explore all about plastic in the ocean. There are 3 different levelled texts in the document so please choose the most appropriate one for your child. Encourage your child to read the text, supporting any words they are unsure of. Reading it several times helps to develop fluency.
Once you have read the text, work through the comprehension questions together.

You can also read your child's school book as an activity.
Spelling:
For spelling, a spelling list for the week is available on Spelling Shed. Children can practise these spellings (and Year 2 common exception words) by playing the games. Alternatively, the Year 2 team will have uploaded the Spelling Shed home learning sheet on to Class Dojo which can be used too. Extra activities could include:
Can your child explain what each word means?
Can your child write a sentence using each word correctly? Can they write a sentence using more than one focus word?
Can your child write the sound buttons underneath each word?
Can your child identify how many syllables are in each word?

English
Imagine finding a tiny dragon like this in your garden!
  • Where is it from?
  • Why is it so small?
  • Are there more like him?
  • Where does he live?
  • How will you look after it?
  • Will you keep it a secret or tell someone?
  • What is it called?
  • Is it magic?  What magic can it do?
Can you write a description about the dragon's appearance and how he behaves?
You could also talk about what he likes to do, about his magical powers and about where you think he came from.
Remember to include:
 - Capital letters and full stops
- Clear finger spaces
- Correct letter formation
- Expanded noun phrases - adjectives could include tiny, friendly, timid etc. Remember your commas if you are listing adjectives.   e.g timid, friendly dragon
- Conjunctions e.g because, when, but, so. For example: The timid dragon is feeling frightened because he is tiny compared to everyone else.
Maths
Your child could practice their addition and subtraction skills using these word problem challenge cards.

First decide together whether you will need to add or take away. Encourage the children to look for key words that tell them which calculation they need to do. Your child can then write out the calculation e.g 43 - 22 =
Encourage your child to use there sticks of ten and dots for ones to calculate the answers.
If your child enjoys learning through games, Numbots, White Rose One Minute Maths (app) and Top Marks are great resources to use.
Wider curriculum
Get your body moving with Joe Wicks, there are many PE videos to choose from!
This year, we will be learning about real life superheroes. You could do some research into a real life superhero who had a positive impact on the world and find out some exciting facts to share with us on your return to school.
