Design and Technology

“I begin with an idea, and then it becomes something else"

-Pablo Picasso

Design Technology develops wide ranging core skills and attitudes which underpin learning in the primary years. Children are introduced to ideas, people, skills and knowledge which may influence their life choices for many years to come. They will utilises the skills they develop through their design education from their ability to solve problems, create many different ideas and objects, hold an array craft tools, and critically view their own work and that of others. The children will also be exposed to the work of internationally famous designers of the past and present.

We endeavour to encourage our children to develop a wide range of ever more complex skills and strategies which allow them to tackle visual and ethical problems, strive to achieve their potential and share their ideas with others.

In developing our design technology curriculum, we want to ensure every child values their own contribution to life and also appreciates the contribution of others.
There are many opportunities for children to gain cultural capital in Design Technology at Etwall Primary School, for example, children take part in various art projects such as Year 1 and 2 are constructing toys with moving parts, designed with a particular demographic in mind.  Design has also been linked to recent projects such as designing and building a Roman house as part of the Year 3 and 4 Roman Experience. Year 5 and 6 will use software skills they have learnt to edit photographs and design web sites.
